    L4D2: Help them up!

Lord of Angry mmmmmar person was a bit of a douche when we played L4D2 gibfest tonight. It was great fun until that guy joined. He was fairly useless, charging ahead and shooting us all the time.

We got our revenge when he got knocked down. Duck watched as his health slowly drained away. He wasn’t happy! 🙂

The Lord of Anger Management needed a lesson in not being an arse.

I love the democracy-in-action box on the left. IMPEACH! hahaha
You know, I downloaded this game months ago and still haven’t played it. Is there a campaign or is it all MP?

      • Donncha 12:28 pm on October 13, 2011 Permalink | Reply

There is a campaign you can play single player but then bots take over the other 3 members of your team. Playing the campaign with us is a lot more fun! There are quite a few different MP modes too, gibfest is a temporary “mutation” that’s active now. Everyone gets an M60 with infinite ammo.

        It’s bloody 🙂

    TF2: Meet the ….

The “meet the ” videos for Team Fortress 2 are legendary. So much so that I had heard of them but nobody ever linked to them. The first one I saw was the recently released “Meet the Medic” (check out the out takes from that video, hilarious!)

So, here they are for your viewing pleasure. All the TF2 character videos so far produced! Go visit the TeamFortress Youtube channel for these and more!

    Meet the Medic

    Meet the Sniper

    Meet the Spy

    Meet the Soldier

    Meet the Engineer

    Meet the Demoman

    Meet the Scout

    Meet the Heavy

Man the medic one was gruesome! Heavy and Sniper are still my favorite

    • David Nicol 10:47 pm on July 18, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Wooo, it took me ages to actually watch all the videos. Medic was cool, sniper was funny, but the Spy one was pretty much spot on. Bastards.

It’s quite impressive how much support Valve give Team Fortress 2. It’s getting a a bit long in the tooth but it continues to get free updates.

This week you can try the game for free through Steam plus there is apparently going to be a big update today, following on the heels of new weapons for the soldier, scout and demoman. Oh, there’s a secret update for the Pyro too.

Now I’m left wondering how do I pick up these weapons? Do they magically appear on the map when playing or are they leveling upgrades? (via)

    Chell in the rain

Check it out here but not if you haven’t completed Portal 2 yet.

Great song and I wish I had noted which PC gaming blog I found this on because they waxed lyrical about it.

Why, if Team Fortress 2 gets video recording can the combined might of DICE and EA not do the same for Bad Company 2?

I am really impressed with the level of support Valve give some of their games. TF2, L4D2, CSS and other games continue to get updates years after release.

    • David Nicol 12:45 am on May 7, 2011 Permalink | Reply

      For the following reasons:

Do something for nothing? Support a game past its time in the chart? EA are all about business, so they’re not interested in supporting something that they don’t continually get revenue from.

The smaller the developer, the more important their existing products are to them and they’re also more appreciative of their customers.

    Not got Portal 2 yet

I guess last week was a good time to go on holiday. Portal 2 was released early in the week but it didn’t come out in Europe until Friday (and retailers broke that embargo by a day or two). My copy from Amazon.co.uk should hopefully arrive today. Woohoo!

I ordered the PS3 version like a few of my gaming friends who also have gaming PCs. Unfortunately PSN has been down for the last 5 days and there’s no indication it’s coming back any time soon. This post on Joystiq (and this reddit post has more details) suggests it’s because a custom firmware allowed users to add money to their PSN wallet using fake credit cards. Odd that since they boasted that the latest firmware update was supposed to stop all firmware hacking …

Well, it also turns out that some people over at NGU found out that you could provide fake CC# info and the authenticity of the information was never checked as you were on Sony’s private developer PSN network (essentially a network that Sony trusted). What happened next was extreme piracy of PSN content. Sony realizing the issue here shut down the network.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to playing Portal 2. I know several of you have already finished the game so no spoilers please! I’ve avoided every single review of the game so far except for the glowing tweets from friends. Hopefully when PSN comes back up I can connect my Steam account to my PSN account.

While away from my consoles I’ve been digging into Half Life 2 and I think I’m near the end of the game. What a ride! Such a good game. If you haven’t got it yet, grab the Orange Box on console or login to your Steam account on PC and go buy this beautiful game!
I have to admit I’m playing it on easy setting. I just want to enjoy the experience in the small chunks of time I have available to play games.

In other news the Minecraft server has been updated with the latest version of Bukkit so the Bukkit plugins are back and working!

Update: Late this evening Sony announced that personal information, possibly including credit card details, may have been stolen. If that’s true, Sony will be in a world of hurt with the authorities for their lax security.

Good luck trying to play Portal 2 in small chunks… I tried that and ended up playing the whole thing in one sitting… Happened to me with Half-Life 2 as well, so I suppose I might just be addicted to Valve.

Either way, you will not be disappointed.

    • tyewebb 11:43 am on April 26, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Hopefully the PSN gets turned back on soon so you can play the Portal 2 co-op. The single player was a good time but I think the co-op is what really made this game amazing to me.
Saw you playing Half Life 2 on steam and it motivated me to start to playing it as well. I thought I had beat it previously on the xbox but I quickly realized it was one of those games I started and then stopped for some reason.

    • Donncha 11:55 am on April 26, 2011 Permalink | Reply

The postman just delivered Portal 2, and I will resist playing it until after work! Really really wishing PSN was up so I could register it on Steam too but I can wait ..

Tye – Saw you playing HL2 as well! Such a great game. Playing on easy really is *too easy* but the variety of gameplay and the story keeps me going. I may come back to it later at normal difficulty.

      • tyewebb 12:06 pm on April 26, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Waiting to play Portal till after work, that’s no fun :).

I’m playing HL2 on normal, its still mostly easy at that level. I do die on occasion in tricky situations but it is a great game. Although most of times i die it isn’t so much from enemies, it’s that I fall off of something or just generally do something stupid. Can’t really figure out why I stopped playing it before.

    • David Nicol 8:10 pm on April 26, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I’m going to turn my Playstation on now and either play some more Borderlands or finish Assassins Creed Brotherhood. Oh the choice of not having any multiplayer 😀

LOL, I should play Portal 2 but I just couldn’t be arsed going upstairs and playing it just yet.

Anyone going to change their credit card details on account of the hack?

Damn you PSN for giving away my personal information, god help you if my enemies find me.

      • Donncha 8:54 pm on April 26, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I don’t think I’ll change my credit card. Even if it’s used, there’s a very good chance the bank will notice before I do. They did before when my CC was stolen.

      • getcrackin 2:30 am on April 27, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Nah. I’d be small potatoes, anyway, and as I receive daily emails from my bank -I’m sure I’d notice if anything significant were missing.

I just want to buy the borderlands DLC, I’m nearly finished borderlands as the sniper now and its been a blast. I’ve done every mission. And I hear the DLC is better then the game itself.

Counter Strike on the Mac is ….

Err, I don’t know what it’s like. It was released on the Mac a few days ago and I installed it last night on my measly Macbook but it crashes each time I start it. Oh well.

10 of the best multiplayer experiences

I just spotted a two page feature in GamesTM listing their top 10 multiplayer games:

    1. Mario Kart
    2. Bomberman
    3. Street Fighter
    4. Halo
    5. Micro Machines
    6. Battlefield
    7. Worms
    8. Pac-man Vs
    9. Team Fortress 2
    10. Starcraft

What? No Modern Warfare 2? Surely they jest!! OMG WTF!

Anyway, the list above reminded me I had the Orange Box for the Xbox, and included on that compilation is Team Fortress 2. Ihaveneverplayedit! Yes, I have never played it! I also only played Portal on my Macbook with frustrating teeth grinding slow results.

Will I play TF2? I’d like to but probably not unless someone volunteers to join me in a game.

Edit: I found this video of Team Fortress 2, uploaded earlier today so looks like an active community still!

    • David Nicol 6:45 pm on June 16, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I’ve seen footage of TF2, but never played it. It looks like it would be quite fun though….. but 360.

      • David Nicol 6:46 pm on June 16, 2010 Permalink | Reply

And I knew there was something else I meant to say:

        MarioKart….. #1!? Really?

        • Donncha 6:50 pm on June 16, 2010 Permalink

I know! I played it a few times but for all the interaction with other players I could be playing a single player game!

Of the games listed, I’ve only played Mario Kart and Battlefield. I really have to give Halo a go sometime, and of course TF2.

    • David Nicol 8:02 pm on June 16, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I’ve only played a couple of them myself, so here’s my opinion on them:
      1. Mario Kart – like you said, but with cheating douches included
      2. Bomberman – there’s a multiplayer in Bomberman? Are we talking about the c64 version?
      3. Street Fighter – Was never any good at it, so my experience is tarnished with arse handings.
      4. Halo – never liked it due to it being Fastest Finger Wins to me.
      5. Micro Machines – never played it
      6. Battlefield – only played BFBC2, and we know how we all feel about that.
      7. Worms – played against friends on the original Playstation and then Worms 3D on the Gamecube – a good fun game. AI is a complete pig-dog though!
      8. Pac-man Vs – never heard of it.
      9. Team Fortress 2 – not played it
      10. Starcraft – not played it.

    • Donncha 8:12 pm on June 16, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I just remembered. I played Micro Machines, but the original game on the Amiga which was a blast. It had on-the-same-screen multiplayer but I think they probably meant a later iteration!

    Steam for Mac launches

Steam launched for Mac this morning and I’ve just installed it, along with the 33MB update that downloaded as soon as I started the programme. They’re giving away Portal for free until May 24th. Thanks Alex for the heads up!

I’m downloading it even though I just got a window saying my system didn’t meet the minimum system requirements. Oddly enough it mentions “Windows driver version” so that might be just a bug. The download is very slow but it’s hit 75% so not long now. More later …

    • Donncha 2:37 pm on May 13, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Portal finally downloaded and, despite the warnings, I launched it. I probably should have shut down everything else to conserve CPU cycles and memory but by setting everything to “low”, setting the aspect ratio to 4:3 and resolution to 800×600 Portal was just about playable on my almost 2 years old 13″ white Macbook.

Apple must be loving this. Steam comes out. All the happy Apple owners suddenly find out their fancy machines really can’t cope with the compromises made to make a cross platform game and they go to apple.com to buy a new machine. Because that’s what Steve Jobs would do.

Played a bit more and it’s creaking along. I might just dig up ASCII Portal again. This ol’ laptop just doesn’t have it in her.

Steam is a disaster. I was fine running stuff in the background and playing Half Life 2: Deathmatch on middle quality, and now I get like 0.15 fps while running the actual Steam program ;O I could probably run it better: spinning the hard drive with my hand, drawing with my other hand and then processing with my brain. ;O

PS£ Orange Box here. Downloaded the Still Alive version on the 360 when I got it hoping for different but alas, no.
I don’t see the need to grapple with a kb when I’m better with a control pad.

Plus Steam crashed on two restarts this morning so has been uninstalled.

      Infocom is it for now.

    Gaming TODO list:

    1. Finish Bad Company 1. I’m almost near the end, but I kept dying in the village where you have to destroy the two bridges.
    2. Play Portal as the sequal has been announced. I have the Orange Box, and despite being a huge Half Life fan back in the day I played about an hour of HL2 before getting bored of it. I never even go to Portal.
