    Sony bans PS3 jailbreak users

If you’ve jailbroken your PS3 then you probably shouldn’t go online until you reverse the jailbreak. Sony has started banning users who use jailbroken PS3 consoles online! The ban is permanent and worldwide.

you cannot use the PlayStation Network with this account (8002a227).

In the old days it was only Microsoft who were banning their users en-masse but now Sony have to do it as well. I wonder if Nintendo will ever do the same thing?

I always forget about the Wii, but you’re right Nintendo as far as I know doesn’t ban people they just play the update the firmware every so often game. I do wonder if PS3 jailbreakers will figure out a way to unban their consoles much like the JTAG people did.

Looks like they have figured out how to unban themselves. Plus they can ban other consoles if they have the serial number of the victim PS3.

        It’s all getting really nasty.

I’m with Sony on this one, the PC games market was destroyed by pirating, I’d hate to see the PS3 go the same way.

    Modern Combat: Domination (demo) review

This is a video review of Modern Combat: Domination that appeared on PSN yesterday. It’s a review of only the demo where search & destroy is the only game mode.

While I appreciated that they used an objective game mode for their demo it was a shame they didn’t include any of the other modes in the 45 minutes allowed to play the demo.

The game may simply be too slow for some people. The default sensitivity is like wading through chest high water. You turn ever so slowly but that can I’m sure be fixed by upping the sensitivity.

In the demo I didn’t play against humans at all, it was all bots and they were of a difficulty level to match recruit level (or maybe normal) in Black Ops Combat Training. Even though it was all bots I sometimes got “room full” errors when trying to join games!

In the review I wasn’t too sure if I’d get the game but after sleeping on it I probably will. It’s only $8 but I’ll wait a few days for the metacritic score to fill out first.

Edit: While writing this post this morning I almost forgot one huge glaring bug that I mention in the video. I couldn’t hear any sound. My headset is hooked up via the digital output while my HDPVR is hooked up via component cables and as you can hear from the video was able to record audio.
I thought it might be my setup, but I tried another game and that was fine. I found one person complaining of the same thing on a forum (that was down when I tried it, I checked the cached copy) so try the demo before you buy. That’s one bug that will stop me buying this game.

PS. Two positive reviews of the full game:

Looks like I’m the only one with sound problems!

I bought the full game. Haven’t played it yet, might get a chance tonight or more likely tomorrow some time!

if you like the game I’ll buy it, anything to change from my medal chasing in bc2. (thrice damn you Emplacement Efficiency pin).

    Modern Combat: Domination

An FPS for $8 you say? A COD clone? It’s out on PSN today and the trailer above looks good. I’m sure reviews will flood in shortly. (via)

    PS3 Break

If you haven’t upgraded your PS3 you can probably hack it and PS3 Break is what you need.

Thankfully, if you want to play online you have to update the firmware and this hack is useless to you. Stopped cheaters in their tracks.

Yes, yes, I know it can be used for homebrew and I’m all for that, but 99% of the time it’ll be used to run pirated software. Lots of great comments on the subject here.

    Hello Playstation Move!

Well, I bought a Playstation Move controller and a navigation controller, plus MAG, as that’s the only shooter supporting Move out there right now.

I’ve only played 2 of the supplied demos, Shooter (accurate but yawn inducing on-rails shooter) and Echochrome ii, an interesting game where you line up shadows to allow a character to run across the screen and escape.

MAG is now loading. It downloaded a 35MB PS3 update fairly quickly but the second 520.84MB update is crawling along.

Yeah, it’s just like the Wii, but with fancy graphics.

Oh yeah, Blur is gone. Traded it in along with several other games. Good riddance!

Mandatory “useless without picts”. From you too. I’m floored. 😉

    • Mark 5:37 pm on October 2, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Seems too gimmicky for me yet. When enough games have it I’ll get it.

    • Donncha 6:03 pm on October 2, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Note to self. Do not try to play Halo Reach while MAG is downloading a big ass update. Sorry Tye, Breeduh. Catch you later!

The good news is that the 300MB it downloaded wasn’t in vain. It resumed.

Steph – I shall see about capturing a video of me waving a pink Move controller around in the air, just for you! 🙂

The Eyepet demo was a huge hit with my 3yro son. Might even buy the full game!

Got the playstation move and a second controller for visitors, I’m currently using it to bash and shield myself in that gladiator game. Also got resident evil 5, now that I see you got MAG I’ll get that also, although I am wondering how good I’ll be against living opponents using the move. Looking forward to Killzone 3 and dead space extraction!!! (they really should have had a better lineup).

Gamestop Trade-in list for Playstation Move

Gamestop are offering a trade in for the Playstation Move starter pack. Trade in 2 games and pay €14.99 for the new motion controller. play.com has the pack for €55.99 so it might be worth checking out how much you can get for these games in other stores as you’re only getting €20 per game, some of which are quite new.

I notice that COD WAW for the Wii is on the list, as is Blur for the PS3 (and my hate for that game is without limit) so there’s plenty to go with. MW2 is there too but I think I’d rather keep that than play Blur again.

Will you be getting the new Playstation Move controller?

    • getcrackin 8:46 pm on October 1, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Nope. How don’t have that many games, anyway.

    • getcrackin 9:02 pm on October 1, 2010 Permalink | Reply

      BTW, what happened with Blur?

      • Donncha 10:23 pm on October 1, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Oh, I think it was coming last in every single race and the grinding you have to do to get a decent car. David mentioned somewhere that you had to get to level 25 or something to unlock the good cars.

I just found it unrewarding and not fun at all.

The PS3 is broken, long live the PS3

You may have read that a USB dongle went on sale that basically put Playstation 3s into debug mode, thus allowing you to do things not normally allowed. Well, Sony sued and stopped them selling it, but of course the software on the dongle has been reverse engineered and made available online.

Where is the code? Well, slashdot linked to it. It’s on github and there’s a slight mod required to play “backups” of games. On a brighter note, any potential pirates will need a compiler to use the code but I guess it’s only a matter of time before a USB iso becomes available.

I hope Sony figure out a way to stop this working. It’s bad news for software publishers if users can copy their games by just plugging a USB dongle into their machine.

    • Mark 4:34 pm on September 2, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I differ. The Xbox has had a huge piracy problem and they are so successful they can increase their prices. This was inevitable – you simply cannot put something into someone’s hand and say it’s not crackable. Would I try it? Sure. I’d buy a dongle just to see how easy it is to install this stuff.
The only console that arguably was killed by piracy that I know of was the PSP and even then Sony have to take the blame for not locking it down, not promoting it and not getting damn good games out. Their inertia did for it too. The PSPGo is a joke.

As for games cheats – they can afford the dedicated servers now they are charging late-comers a tenner to join in.

    • tyewebb 4:35 pm on September 2, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Have no fear, Sony will just put out a firmware update disabling USB ports.

    • David Nicol 4:44 pm on September 2, 2010 Permalink | Reply

The main issue for us as consumers here is not the “piracy” issue but the debug mode consoles. For ‘debug’ read JTAG. Look at all the bullshit that goes on on the Xbox lobbies – that’s a bigger problem than the minority of people who’d use hooky copy games (and let’s be honest here, if EA is planning on charging a tenner for after market buyers to access online their pockets would not be that badly hit).

The only people who will actually be hurt by this PS3 JTAG crap is us. Not Sony, not the game developers, us – the legitimate consumers who actually keep the machine fed.

But who cares! The Xbox720 and PS4000 will be out in a year or so and then there won’t be any problems (for six months).

      • Mark 5:00 pm on September 2, 2010 Permalink | Reply

We have been lied to ever since the “CD’s are cheaper, prices will drop” times. The XB has the piracy and look at their game prices. Now look at Sony’s and see that Sony have had their fat cushion of profit from ps3 users and that this – if it becomes as widespread – simply puts them in the same price/profit/loss as their XB titles. Or maybe we have been subsidising the XBox piracy because we had no choice in how to play in which case the games companies just lost some – some – of that profit.

What we can expect is huge claims by Sony to the press about the millions of £$ a day it loses and it’s effect on future gaming blah blah blah. All lies.

Charge the PS3 controller from your PC

You might not have realised it but you can charge your PS3 controller by plugging the USB charging lead into a bog standard USB port on a PC or Mac.

No need to have the PS3 powered up and draining your household electricity. Much better to use that PC you’re checking your email on and browsing the net. 🙂

Yes, I’ll freely admit I hadn’t thought of this, mainly because the controllers last quite a while and it’s usually when I’m playing a game that I notice there’s one bar of power left.

Heh, this is the one and only way I charge my PS3 controller. 😛

      • David Nicol 8:45 am on September 2, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Yup, me too. Although there is miniscule advantage to connecting the controller to the PS3 and that is to remove/reduce input lag from the bluetooth (although if you’re that pernickety about things like that you’d be playing wired anyhoo).

        • Alex M. 8:47 am on September 2, 2010 Permalink

Oh, so it actually does send the signal over the USB connection? I wondered if it bothered to or not.

        • Mark 10:42 am on September 2, 2010 Permalink

It does and we found this because when playing it would kill the signal from the router to the laptop – a distance of some 20ft. Plug controller into lead and signal came back. This was an older router and I forget what I tried but I could replicate every time. With the current router all is okay.

I tried to charge my 4G iPhone on the playstation last night but it crashed it. The phone completely shuts down the PS3. Un plugged the USB cable and it work perfect. How strange

    • Conor 11:40 am on September 2, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I have two controllers so I always leave one to charge and use the other one. Never had to turn the ps3 on just to recharge or had to stop a game to recharge. I also leave a usb in the ps3 at all times which stored only the backups of my ps3 saves. After the yellow light of death last christmas I am not getting caught again. It did show me what games I could get rid off as I wouldn’t play them again.

I logged into PSN and my friends list was gone! ARGH!

In desperation I tried my message box and tried to send a friends request to bigpresh, the last email in there but it said we were already friends. Phew. All the friends have appeared again but they’re all logged off which seems odd for 9pm on a Sunday evening.

    Something up with PSN?

I’m definitely logged off at the moment – was on earlier. Haven’t had any problems with the dashboard to report. Will let you know later if I do though.

Only a temporary error. I was scared that Adam had fiddled with the dashboard (and deleted my contacts) while he was playing LBP!
