Somehow I’m known for “hacked lobbies” on Xbox 360. How the hell did that happen?

While playing Bad Company 2 with Dvotee, NorseValkyr1e and macmanx this evening a random guy from my friendslist joined our party and asked about hacked lobbies. Why would I get you into a hacked lobby? I hate the thought of them, and don’t even play Modern Warfare 2 any more!

I think I should clean up my XBL friends list. Only people I know and/or have played BC2 with survive the cull!

Maybe they saw your epic jeep race through the mountains and figured no normal player could do that? 🙂

I blame MyFingersHurt, we had such a good time I had to recreate it. I think it was him went over that ledge and into the AA gun on Bravo the first time 🙂

I was watching from behind in the tank. I couldn’t figure out why everyone was screaming, then I saw the jeep rip up the hill and fly off the edge.

It was just so hilarious, I still laugh every time I think about it. 🙂

xeer2000 i really want to be yur friend so plz giv me a chance i am really good at zombies so plz allow me 2

Doesn’t the lack of recent BLOPs videos hint at the fact I don’t play it any more? Besides, only ever had it on PS3!

L4D2: Modern Warfare 2 Vacant Survival

“Nah, they’re probably just part of the background.”

This is a short clip from one of the first games myself and David played the other night in Left 4 Dead 2. The map is a remake of the Modern Warfare 2 map Vacant and any MW2 players will immediately recognise it.

Music is Scary Tale in Olde York by the Surf Sluts.

TyeWebb’s recording of a later campaign game in the Carnival with me and David. I think this map is paid-for DLC on Xbox but comes free with the game on PC and Mac. I presume it’s one of those “DLC we had to charge for on Xbox” that Valve complained about. Then how did DICE release Map Pack 7 for free then? Did they swallow the money Microsoft charged them to release that patch?

Hacked Modern Warfare 2 lobbies on PS3

    Well, this sucks.

David stumbled into a hacked MW2 lobby on Playstation 3, not Xbox 360. When I first saw it I thought it might be connected to the recently announced discovery of the PS3 root keys. But I was giving the script kiddies too much credit. Even with the keys they wouldn’t have a clue what to do with them. They’ll have to wait until the smart kids write the tools that take advantage of the situation.

Meanwhile, I went searching for bushigans devils lobby v3 and found this video from October, well before any keys were discovered…

    Silly, stupid cheaters.

I am curious what caused this to explode all of a sudden. You show that it seems to have nothing to do with the recent hacking of the PS3 so I wonder what happened. Maybe these mods just recently became widely available on forums and so now every idiot has access to it.

      • Donncha 9:33 am on January 16, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Sheer weight of numbers perhaps? Or else someone used the usb stick hack to get control of their machine, and the hack “infected” other hosts like I’ve heard it does on Xbox.

The scary thing is, that means that MW2 hosts share executable code, or at the very least there’s a unfixed buffer overflow the hackers take advantage of to run unauthorised code on unsuspecting machines… A buffer overflow that hasn’t been patched in months. You’d have the security forums up in arms if that was the case with non-gaming software.

      This is interesting

It appears IW is placing most of the blame on the PS3 security problems and claim they cannot provide a solution. So I guess COD4 and MW2 really are dead on the PS3.

      • Donncha 11:29 pm on January 17, 2011 Permalink | Reply

WOW, I’d hate to be a Modern Warfare 2 fan on PS3 right now. That is awful.

      • Donncha 8:06 am on January 18, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Actually, it occurred to me later that IW are probably wrong and are redirecting the blame. The video I posted above was made in October, and the keys discovered by Fail0ver haven’t been released, only some tools AFAIK. The hackers could have used the USB hack but that doesn’t explain how they get online now since the firmware upgrade that fixed that bug …

      • Donncha 10:30 am on January 18, 2011 Permalink | Reply

There are great comments on this post, basically calling foul on IW blaming the PS3 security breach.

      • tyewebb 12:54 pm on January 18, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I was thinking about this a little more too and came to same conclusion, IW is likely just using the PS3 security breach as a scapegoat. When MW2 was getting hacked to pieces on the jtagged xboxes IW did take some steps to try to stop it, so placing the blame just on the console doesn’t even make sense based upon their past history.

The other issue is that since IW basically fell apart last year its likely that most of the programmers from COD4 and MW2 are no longer with IW. So all their current programmers would be working with someone else’s code and trying to understand it and patch in a solution while not breaking something else. This is certainly a crappy situation for IW but you would think when you are making a billion dollars a game you could afford the expense of continuing to support the game long after release.

        • Donncha 11:41 pm on January 19, 2011 Permalink

Just saw this on the MW2 subreddit. Author claims it’s Sony’s fault because they’re brand new hacks that take advantage of the PS3 security hacks and that it will take a long time to fix. I suspect his assertion that it’ll take a long time to fix is his opinion only.

Very interesting comments though and explains David’s video. He was made host by the hackers I think.

    Good Riddance Modern Warfare 2

I said goodbye to Modern Warfare 2 more than 6 months ago when Bad Company 2 came out but lots of Call of Duty fans still play it to this day. Tomorrow, not so much.

That great singing voice is Colin and the link is via him too. Great job!

Being an xbox noob MW2 was my first game and I guess I will always have a ‘special place’ in my heart for it…ahhhhhhhhh thats nice but like you I stopped playing it…. probably 4 months ago.

I think all the auto aims and other cheats, plus me not being any good and of course the now well documented ping/lag issues I encountered ruined it.

Still undecided on Black Ops maybe santa can bring it to me but the problem is with Cataclysm coming out 7th Dec will I get much time to play?

WoodysGamertag dissected a game of Modern Warfare played by xSocrates on the ship level. I don’t know what it’s called but we played this level the other night and I think Mike mentioned this. Pretty amazing gameplay.

Every time I play Modern Warfare 2, I do it without killing anyone. My aim could use some work.

Mode Pack #6 is apparently coming to Bad Company 2 next week according to this post. No details, and I haven’t checked the BfBC2 store but it fits in with their monthly giveaway of new maps mode packs.

So, we’re not going to see new maps. That’s clear enough already. What would you like to see? If I was a betting man I’d say we’ll get rush on Laguna Alta which could be like rush on White Pass. Alpha will be so close to the attackers deployment battle will be joined as soon as anyone moves an inch.
Or they’ll make a mode pack for SDM or squad rush and everyone will go YAAAAWWWWWNNNNN!

I was just thinking the other day how the lack of a level editor is such a missed opportunity for players. The Doom and Quake series had level editors, other shooters from that era had them too. I remember downloading mods for Doom 2 and having a blast! Are games companies so scared we won’t buy their next big product just because there’s a level editor (and hopefully active community) in a game? Really?
Do they lack the imagination to make a better sequel and feel threatened by amateurs designing levels? Do they think we won’t splash the cash if we have new levels for their old game?

The average age of games players is now in the early thirties. That means they’re probably working, have a family and have (some) disposable income. Sure, getting maps for free is great, but what about a map store? The Apple app store proved that people will buy in their droves if the price is right. Apple make a fortune from it and there’s a huge community around it. People talk all the time about their favourite apps. Why the hell haven’t EA or Activision replicated this for their respective franchises? All we get is what the company blesses and produces itself.

Would you buy maps built by amateurs or even semi-pros who didn’t work for the game publisher? What if they were priced like app store products? US$0.99 for a map?

    Such a missed opportunity.

Edit: I forgot about Starcraft II. That has a level editor of some sort doesn’t it?

    • tyewebb 6:09 am on August 12, 2010 Permalink | Reply

The map store is a really cool idea. If maps were priced at 0.99 I could see myself buying quite a few maps. They would have to control things a bit, otherwise the game would become flooded with maps and matchmaking might get a bit hard to to do.

    • mjwhittle 7:52 am on August 12, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I don’t think it will ever happen though. The call of duty series has sold more then 20 million map packs to date. The lost revenue would be massive. They make to much money from DLC now and with the game industry slowing down it wouldn’t make good business. Me as a gamer would love it. New maps for a different day of the week .

in my opinion i wouldnt as firstly it will be a trophy then people will put a level with a tree in it and bang 500,000 tree levels.
skate 3, far cry 2 had level editiors

    • David Nicol 5:59 pm on August 12, 2010 Permalink | Reply

All we seem to get most of the time a barely finished product and then squeezed as hard as possible in order for the publishers to extract as much profit from the consumers as possible. Instead of paying extra for added bits (or bits that should have been included *ahem* Onslaught), how about the developers pay us for every glitch that is found? That’d soon make them up their QA game!

But to the original question – no. I wouldn’t pay .99p for a community map. If I hadn’t come from PC gaming then maybe I’d think differently, but as it is commercialisation is destroying an sense of community. Can you imagine the amount of shitty maps that would be released? Just look at the app store now, how many of the gazillion apps in there would you actually pay for…. let alone use?

How about the developers allow us to use community generated maps in non-ranked games (so no boosting) for no monies? Create a community playlist using P2P to download the maps – et voila! Oh, but I’m missing something, and I can hear the publishers now…. “WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?”

      How about fan loyalty?
