    You buying Medal of Honor?

It all seemed so easy in the last year or so to pick what games to buy.

    1. Modern Warfare? Check.
    2. Modern Warfare 2? Check.
    3. Bad Company 2? Check.
    4. Halo Reach? Check.

Medal of Honor? I don’t know yet. I’m waiting to see what Mike thinks of the game!

Meanwhile, videos have started to appear on ye olde Youtube..

    Geoff likes it. +1

    NGT likes it. +1

    d0n7bl1nk likes it. +1

So, thumbs up from a number of Youtube commentators. Apparently lag has been pretty bad on all versions, particularly the consoles. Hopefully they’ll get that sorted out.

I’m actually enjoying Halo Reach and wishing it was multi platform so I could play in a game with my friends on the Playstation 3, but maybe the next Bungie game will give us that opportunity. I briefly considered buying a PVR as all the cool kids are doing that, but Bungie Pro is cheap enough, and you can render 50 minutes of gameplay for US$5 which won’t break the bank. If I feel motivated enough to try that, add a voice over and upload it, then I’ll splash the cash. It’s not as if I get amazing gameplay all the time but I do have my moments.

I’m a fan of the previous MOH games so I’ll be buying this. Thanks to you I got to play the beta version but needless to say I didn’t like the look of it, I thought it looked to much like COD. Dont get me wrong, I love COD but I believe games should have their own unique look and feel, unless its a sequel.

I wont be playing it on-line for while though as new games tend to have a lot of lag until the infrastructure gets upgraded to take the load. I’m more interested in the single player for this game.

      • Donncha 12:40 pm on October 14, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Geoff/Sasbenjr replied to my comment on his video above recommending the single player game too so it’s looking like a “buy” for me too, but possibly not straight away.

        • Conor 9:03 am on October 15, 2010 Permalink

Yeah? Let me know if you think the multiplayer is worth it and I’ll get it. But from the reviews and what you showed of the multiplayer it might be best to wait one month and see if we’re up to our necks in BC2 Vietnam and COD.

        • Gavin 9:39 am on October 15, 2010 Permalink

Well I got a copy last night and played a few hours of single player and not much of the multi-player.

Single player has some impressive moments but in general it has a very cheap feel to it. Explosions are not what you expect from a fps these days and it actually reminded me of playing a very old shooter before the days of consoles. I thought with Dice involved we would have seen some nice destruction like we see in BC2, nah no where near it.

Another thing, my PS3 struggled to keep up with the graphics, sound kept dipping in & out and there was some lad (on single player too). It could be just my console because we have an Xbox here and there was no signs of those issues.

As for multi-player, I don’t like it but there again its early days for me. Games are approx 7 minutes long with lots of kill, die, kill with no real structure in the battle. There again this because I was probably a newbie and it could be down to the game mode I was playing. I really cant see me spending much time playing the multi-player, it just didn’t give me excitement that COD or BC2 did.

I try and write up a review of it but the above is my first impressions.

Mike emailed me and David last night to say that we shouldn’t buy the game so I think I’ll hang on to my pennies for the Vietnam expansion and Black Ops.

Gavin – do you have Reach? I can’t remember if I saw you playing that. I had one multiplayer game of it last night and had my ass handed to me. It’s no fun playing without friends on the team…

I also rendered 2 minutes of an earlier game so I might try throw a commentary over it over the weekend if I find time (and energy, weekends are exhausting).

      • Gavin 12:02 pm on October 15, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Halo never appealed to me but I am getting bullied by others to start playing it. We have a copy here for the xbox so I might give it a try, are you on PS3?

I have loads of footage that needs to be rendered but like you its finding the time to get it done, there is only so many hours I can sit in-front of the computer every day.

        • Donncha 12:07 pm on October 15, 2010 Permalink

Am I on PS3? Yes, I’m on your friendslist as “donnchaoc” remember? 🙂

Even if you’re not a fan of Halo, Firefight is fun with a few friends. Maybe I’ll persuade you to come join us some evening for a game.

        • Gavin 3:34 pm on October 15, 2010 Permalink

lol No I didnt mean it like that, I should have said are you on the PS3 with Halo? cause I know you have the xbox also. I’ll give it a whizz on xbox sometime and if its something I like I’ll buy it for the PS3.

        • Donncha 3:42 pm on October 15, 2010 Permalink

Ah! Nah, Halo is Xbox only unfortunately. MOH is out the window, so there’s nothing really grabbing me on PS3 right now.

    • Ryan Markel 12:56 pm on October 15, 2010 Permalink | Reply

MoH isn’t happening for me, mostly because of a combination of shooter fatigue, lack of time to play anything, and the pretty ridiculous replayability of Reach multiplayer. (And a little thing called Rock Band 3.)

I even traded in all my CoD games recently because post-Reach I’m pretty sure I won’t subject myself to that particular brand of torture anymore.

      • Donncha 3:43 pm on October 15, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Saw you on last night in Rock Band! I’ll have to drag you screaming into another game of Firefight 🙂

Reconsidering my Medal of Honor pre-order

I pre-ordered Medal of Honor (for PS3) a few days ago from Amazon. I selected their free delivery method so it’ll be almost a week after release before I get the game, but I can wait. Really. Maybe.

Anyway, a few videos from the PC beta showed up on Youtube this morning that made me rethink the wisdom of pre-ordering the game.

In Jay’s video he must have been fuming at the lack of progress and deaths he suffered at the hands of unseen enemies. I certainly would have been (quietly) cursing my enemy.

Seems there are already aimbots in the PC beta. Look at how fast that guy flicks from left to right shooting at distant enemies.

But finally, d0n7bl1nk posted a video where he did rather well and he was upbeat about the game. Even at 360p the scenery looks stunning to me, and at least there won’t be any crate bashing in the objective type games.

One final video from Mileycyrusthevirus. He’s undecided about the game too but the gameplay video is great.

Have any of you, my dear readers played the PC beta? Do you like it? The console beta months ago was a pile of pooh but DICE have had plenty of time to work their magic and make it better.

PS. Good to see David’s still posting videos!

I have to say I’m still not seeing anything here that makes me want this game. Speaking of aimbots, check out this post on Hupit from Jay about an aimbot user posting on the EA forums, I laugh every time I read it.

On another topic, have you tried out MAG yet, with or without the Move controller?

      • Donncha 12:22 pm on October 5, 2010 Permalink | Reply

So that’s why someone left a comment on David’s video saying “camper of the snipe” 🙂

I’ve got as far as doing the tutorial/training section in MAG but I was too tired to play it last night. Calibration of the Move controller is easy enough but you have to do it each time you fire up the game which is annoying. At least the Wii controller was a bit smarter about that.

Aiming during the training session was easy enough, but I found myself aiming towards the ground a lot as I was walking or crawling around. Aiming from the hip or down sight at targets required me to think differently as I wasn’t moving my thumb carefully, I was aiming from the wrist.

It’s also annoying that you’re supposed to sit about 3ft or so from the tv/monitor. I sit at my desk to play games, not in the middle of my (small) office.

The navigation controller (ie. Wii nunchuck) has a small joystick, but in game that’s for strafing left and right and forward/backwards, turning requires moving the sight with the move controller left and right. Might be a problem in multiplayer. Anyone with a Move controller won’t really be able to circle strafe an enemy.

Move is *no* substitute for a keyboard and even a cheap mouse. It baffles me that Sony and MS have never really pushed that control method.

    • tyewebb 12:43 pm on October 5, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Wow 3 ft from your TV/Monitor, that sounds like a serious limitation.

I think the consoles have never promoted the keyboard/mouse method because those users would have a huge advantage over normal controller users. In fact since the 3.50 firmware update some of those 3rd party controllers are having issues. Not sure if it was an intentional thing by Sony or those 3rd party controllers just suffered collateral damage from Sony trying to address the jailbreak issue.

      • Donncha 1:15 pm on October 5, 2010 Permalink | Reply

But it’s not as if using a keyboard and mouse is rocket science. I mean, PC users use them! (hides)

I saw that about the 3rd party controllers. I bet they’re not licensed, and it was intentional!

The last 2 PC games I can remember playing were actually on a ’93 Mac Performa. They were Marathon and Star Wars: X-Wing.

I think mine was Half Life 2. I bought a new PC to play it but the machine was too buggy to be stable playing so I never got into it like I did Half Life 1. When I bought the Orange Box for Xbox 360 I never got into it again because of the choice of games available. Oh well!

Before that I think it was Quake 3 🙂

        • getcrackin 8:08 pm on October 8, 2010 Permalink

I thought about getting Orange Box just so I could play Portal. Speaking of puzzle-like games, I wish Limbo wasn’t an Xbox exclusive.

I went ahead and downloaded the MOH beta last night and played a bit. Overall the game was just sort of meh. The Rush game type was pretty bad, but would probably be more enjoyable after you develop some map knowledge. Sector Control (Domination like game) was fairly fun, but the map seemed small and over run with people.

I didn’t find it to be a bad game, but it also didn’t get me excited for the full game. Probably going to skip MOH and just wait for Black Ops. Based upon Mike’s tweets last night his experience was far more negative than mine.

Thanks for that. I missed Mike’s tweet but have just read it. Ouch.

Just got my Medal of Honor beta code from GAME and eventually managed to get an online code. Their site refused to accept my EA login, but on the third page it asks for your EA id. I typed in what it could be and it worked! Hell of a security system EA, that’s totally screwed up!

So, I’ll try MOH tonight, but I’m not expecting much. From all I’ve heard it seems like a right pile of pooh. I wonder if Amazon.co.uk will send me a beta code too. If they do, who wants it? Only regular commenters need apply please! 🙂

Oh, if you’ve played the beta and can reproduce any of the freeze bugs, take a look at this forum thread and reply if the bug isn’t covered yet. Thanks Sgt_Roach_ for linking to my post below with Geoff’s video showing the freezing bugs he found! Saved me the job!

Ooh ooh me me! If it’s available.

I’ve watched a couple of vids on it including Cards and it looks like it’s either going to be either really crap or really good.

      • Donncha 2:33 pm on June 21, 2010 Permalink | Reply

OK, it’s yours whenever Amazon.co.uk get around to sending out their invite code! I had a quick game during lunch and it’s not so bad. I had the sensitivity up too high but Helmund Valley has lots of bottlenecks making it possible to get a few kills. I think I got a pointlstreak but it didn’t freeze (got a +5 for a revenge kill and +5 for assist so that might have helped) and I didn’t know how to activate it. Game ended very quickly.

        • David Nicol 3:11 pm on June 21, 2010 Permalink

It was either Geoff or Cards that mentioned that the sensitivity is like on MW2 so I’ll probably use a 3 or 4 on there.

ALSO: One of my subs on YouTube has just given me a Beta code so you can offer the code to someone else if/when you get it from Amazon.

        • mjwhittle 4:10 pm on June 21, 2010 Permalink

Can I have that code please as I won’t get mine till 5 July because I ordered through play.com 🙂 :0

Unfortunately that second code won’t be sent out until then for me too. Preorder it from Game ASAP and you’ll get a code tomorrow!

There’s no specific cancel page on the Game website but I’m going to contact customer support and cancel my order tomorrow.

Ah, just noticed that Amazon.co.uk will send out invite codes on July 5th! Boo! If you preorder it at Game you don’t have to hand over any cash. I’m going to cancel my preorder in a day or two.

Freezing problems in Medal of Honor Beta

If you haven’t played Medal of Honor yet you may have seen people mention how easy it is to cause the beta to freeze your PS3, requiring a reboot of the machine. I wonder if this is why the Xbox version is delayed a week?

Anyway, Geoff has the beta, and created MoHbeta2010, a new channel where he’ll be posting videos from the beta. The one above is easily the most informative of the videos I’ve seen today. He talks about guns, hit damage, the super powerful tank, and “hit streaks”. And of course how to freeze the beta too.

One freeze is triggered by getting 40 points through gun kills. Shoot 3 or 4 people without dying and your machine will freeze up! Crazy isn’t it?

      • Donncha 10:39 am on June 21, 2010 Permalink | Reply

The only reason I can think of for them missing this bug was that they’re all such good players they killed each other before they reached a killstreak!

Either that, or someone made a tiny change just before release and it wasn’t play tested enough. I think that’s more likely.

Yeah same here i got a 21 kill streak and froze when i was about to get 2 more kills..
also started a game with 6-0 with everybody in the game with 1 or 2 kills; i froze about every time I got first on the scoreboard :/ pisses me off I’ve only leveled once >:l

From all the times it’s frozen for me so far, it seems like getting a killstreak too fast is the problem.
I can get 5 or more kills slowly, but if I get 2 or more one right after another it freezes

      • PersonMan 3:43 am on June 22, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I actually managed to get up to a 10 kill streak by letting the points on the screen from a kill disappear before I kill the next, the killstreak only ended ’cause I accidentily killed 2 too quickly
Ofcourse every time I managed to get over the 30/40 freeze is by getting to 30 then get a 15+ pt kill

    Medal of Honor Gameplay Video

Cardsnumber7 is the first person on my subscriber list to post a Medal of Honor gameplay video to Youtube. He says himself that he’s figuring out how to play the game and the commentary isn’t very good but it gives a good idea of how the game looks and plays.

Geoff held a streaming session on justin.tv playing MOH but when I hopped onto his channel he was playing Arica Harbour in BfBC2! I guess MOH came later.

Now I’m wondering how many of my online friends are taking part in the MOH beta. Field Operative is, though he’s on Xbox and the beta is delayed a week on that platform. Geoff is, on PS3, Mike too?

Field Operative linked to more videos, I hope he doesn’t mind if I post them too. They’re tiny on his blog!

Ah feck, tempted now to pre-order it to get in the beta!

    • David Nicol 8:52 am on June 18, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Geoff had technical issues with the beta, I don’t know if it was the code, but he couldn’t get in. I was in the live stream for a while to watch. The chat was pretty annoying to watch though (the viewers, not Geoff et al).

      • Donncha 9:03 am on June 18, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Ah ha. On some of the videos above they mention that the beta freezes the PS3. Cards took 3 or 4 tries to get a video of one round without crashing.

BfBC2 isn’t quite that bad for me, but every 2nd or 3rd night the PS3 will freeze and require a reboot when I play that game.

Have you pre-ordered the game to get in the beta?

    • Donncha 11:37 am on June 18, 2010 Permalink | Reply

This amazon.co.uk thread on the beta is discouraging. Seems that European users won’t get into the beta until July 5th, and the last comment currently is less than encouraging:

Dont worry guys your not missing anything. imagine the worst parts of modern warfare combined with the wost parts of battlefield with out any of the bits that made that game great. poor graphics, no destructible enviroments, weak guns, poor sound, no teams or squads, only three classes with an option of two guns per class, no awsum battlefield bullet physics, poor hit dection, insurgents use a gay little axe intead of a knife (it looks soo gay), the game freezes for about a second everytime you die, which really pulls you out of the game, art design is completely uninspired and bland. for all the snipers out there none of the sniper rifles ae one shot one kill which makes sniping a chore when you can be murdered with three rounds fo an assult rifle of sub machine gun from across the map. when i started playing last night thee where around 400-500 people online playing it, now there are only 100. play battlefield or modern warfare or even better go outside and do something productive, this game sucks.

After watching this video by bigMooney06 I decided to pre-order the game. I didn’t know you didn’t have to pay for it until the game ships so if I don’t like it there’s plenty of time to cancel the order.

Won’t get the beta code until July 5th though. Grrr.
