11 minute of Syndicate and it looks boring as hell

It’s an early level from the game but it’s so disappointing. Your player rolls around the level with arms outstretched holding a handgun. I hope the final game is better than the impression this gameplay teaser gives.

There’s far too many ways to kill enemies in this game. It’s like the guy is all powerful.

    • Donncha 10:09 am on October 14, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Nick – you should play the original game. Huge selection of weapons but really, after you unlock the minigun there’s not much point using anything else except for entertainment purposes.
There are sniper rifles useful on some levels and the last level needs a particular weapon to get anywhere but the minigun is all powerful 🙂

RPS had a quick 10 minute play of Syndicate, of the same section we saw in the trailer above. Not good either..

Battlefield 3 has extra pre-order content

As seen here, in the Community Press Room, here in various other places this morning.

This was one of the Battlefield 3 images released yesterday but someone modified the filename slightly and got this image which includes the following information:

The Battlefield 3 Limited Edition includes pack Battlefield 3: Back To Karkand at no extra charge*.

This themed expansion pack features four legendary maps from Battlefield 2 boldly reimagined with Frostbite 2 physics, destruction and visuals.
Completing the package are classic Battlefield 2 weapons and vehicles, unique rewards, new achievements/trophies and more.
For those who don’t pre-order to secure the limited edition, Battlefield 3: Back To Karkand will be available for purchase approximately one month after the game’s release

So, either that was a smart marketing ploy by EA and the modified filename was leaked by someone there or this was a lucky guess. It’s not confirmed yet and there’s plenty of time to pre-order your copy. I should probably ask, “Who isn’t pre-ordering Battlefield 3?” rather than the opposite!

Every report of this “find” says “someone” found it, not naming who so I presume it was an EA leak.

    • Alex M. 10:28 am on February 5, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Likely they just put the media/copy in place in preparation for revealing the info.

    • getcrackin 5:14 am on February 6, 2011 Permalink | Reply

It’ll depend on how much the “limited edition” costs.

New and yes. I doubt there will be a difference but I want to play with you, David, Mike and everyone on PS3 as well as Paul, TheFingersHurt and others on Xbox. Oh yeah, I’m a rich fecker, money pouring out everywhere… I wish!

Mode Pack #6 is apparently coming to Bad Company 2 next week according to this post. No details, and I haven’t checked the BfBC2 store but it fits in with their monthly giveaway of new maps mode packs.

So, we’re not going to see new maps. That’s clear enough already. What would you like to see? If I was a betting man I’d say we’ll get rush on Laguna Alta which could be like rush on White Pass. Alpha will be so close to the attackers deployment battle will be joined as soon as anyone moves an inch.
Or they’ll make a mode pack for SDM or squad rush and everyone will go YAAAAWWWWWNNNNN!

I was just thinking the other day how the lack of a level editor is such a missed opportunity for players. The Doom and Quake series had level editors, other shooters from that era had them too. I remember downloading mods for Doom 2 and having a blast! Are games companies so scared we won’t buy their next big product just because there’s a level editor (and hopefully active community) in a game? Really?
Do they lack the imagination to make a better sequel and feel threatened by amateurs designing levels? Do they think we won’t splash the cash if we have new levels for their old game?

The average age of games players is now in the early thirties. That means they’re probably working, have a family and have (some) disposable income. Sure, getting maps for free is great, but what about a map store? The Apple app store proved that people will buy in their droves if the price is right. Apple make a fortune from it and there’s a huge community around it. People talk all the time about their favourite apps. Why the hell haven’t EA or Activision replicated this for their respective franchises? All we get is what the company blesses and produces itself.

Would you buy maps built by amateurs or even semi-pros who didn’t work for the game publisher? What if they were priced like app store products? US$0.99 for a map?

    Such a missed opportunity.

Edit: I forgot about Starcraft II. That has a level editor of some sort doesn’t it?

    • tyewebb 6:09 am on August 12, 2010 Permalink | Reply

The map store is a really cool idea. If maps were priced at 0.99 I could see myself buying quite a few maps. They would have to control things a bit, otherwise the game would become flooded with maps and matchmaking might get a bit hard to to do.

    • mjwhittle 7:52 am on August 12, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I don’t think it will ever happen though. The call of duty series has sold more then 20 million map packs to date. The lost revenue would be massive. They make to much money from DLC now and with the game industry slowing down it wouldn’t make good business. Me as a gamer would love it. New maps for a different day of the week .

in my opinion i wouldnt as firstly it will be a trophy then people will put a level with a tree in it and bang 500,000 tree levels.
skate 3, far cry 2 had level editiors

    • David Nicol 5:59 pm on August 12, 2010 Permalink | Reply

All we seem to get most of the time a barely finished product and then squeezed as hard as possible in order for the publishers to extract as much profit from the consumers as possible. Instead of paying extra for added bits (or bits that should have been included *ahem* Onslaught), how about the developers pay us for every glitch that is found? That’d soon make them up their QA game!

But to the original question – no. I wouldn’t pay .99p for a community map. If I hadn’t come from PC gaming then maybe I’d think differently, but as it is commercialisation is destroying an sense of community. Can you imagine the amount of shitty maps that would be released? Just look at the app store now, how many of the gazillion apps in there would you actually pay for…. let alone use?

How about the developers allow us to use community generated maps in non-ranked games (so no boosting) for no monies? Create a community playlist using P2P to download the maps – et voila! Oh, but I’m missing something, and I can hear the publishers now…. “WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?”

      How about fan loyalty?

Just got my Medal of Honor beta code from GAME and eventually managed to get an online code. Their site refused to accept my EA login, but on the third page it asks for your EA id. I typed in what it could be and it worked! Hell of a security system EA, that’s totally screwed up!

So, I’ll try MOH tonight, but I’m not expecting much. From all I’ve heard it seems like a right pile of pooh. I wonder if Amazon.co.uk will send me a beta code too. If they do, who wants it? Only regular commenters need apply please! 🙂

Oh, if you’ve played the beta and can reproduce any of the freeze bugs, take a look at this forum thread and reply if the bug isn’t covered yet. Thanks Sgt_Roach_ for linking to my post below with Geoff’s video showing the freezing bugs he found! Saved me the job!

Ooh ooh me me! If it’s available.

I’ve watched a couple of vids on it including Cards and it looks like it’s either going to be either really crap or really good.

      • Donncha 2:33 pm on June 21, 2010 Permalink | Reply

OK, it’s yours whenever Amazon.co.uk get around to sending out their invite code! I had a quick game during lunch and it’s not so bad. I had the sensitivity up too high but Helmund Valley has lots of bottlenecks making it possible to get a few kills. I think I got a pointlstreak but it didn’t freeze (got a +5 for a revenge kill and +5 for assist so that might have helped) and I didn’t know how to activate it. Game ended very quickly.

        • David Nicol 3:11 pm on June 21, 2010 Permalink

It was either Geoff or Cards that mentioned that the sensitivity is like on MW2 so I’ll probably use a 3 or 4 on there.

ALSO: One of my subs on YouTube has just given me a Beta code so you can offer the code to someone else if/when you get it from Amazon.

Unfortunately that second code won’t be sent out until then for me too. Preorder it from Game ASAP and you’ll get a code tomorrow!

There’s no specific cancel page on the Game website but I’m going to contact customer support and cancel my order tomorrow.

What did Bad Company 1 look like?

I was a big fan of Bad Company 1, the single player game, last year when I bought it. Night after night I played it until I got to the village where you have to blow up the bridges to stop US forces advancing. No matter what I did I could not complete that stage! It was so frustrating! I bought MW2 and a Gold subscription to Xbox Live shortly after and haven’t really looked at BC1 since.

So, it was nice to see that bharlan2002 has posted a commentary on “Harvest Day”, a map set in rolling hills and farmhouses. Unfortunately his commentary is too low but I still enjoyed it and I wonder if DICE will bring back some of the maps from the previous game. There are still two VIP slots left in the store. Let’s hope they fill them with real map packs, and not “mode packs”.

    • David Nicol 9:09 pm on June 20, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I hope that for the ‘VIPs’ they definitely release something that makes us feel important for once.

I tried to watch that vid but in order to listen to his commentary I had to risk permanent deafness from the game audio so had to stop

Bad Co. 1 has it in Spades over Bad Co. 2. . . I could never understand why they made such drastic changes. Out of my own friends list, I would say that 80% of my friends who ALL played BF:BF 1 prefer it over BF:BC 2. I feel like EA is releasing these Alternate scenarios to placate their audience; but they are missing the mark. Look at 1943 – that game was fun for about 15 minutes, and when people realized it was nothing more than a flash-based game, they came back in droves to BF:BC 1.
When BF:BC 2 was released there was a lot of hype, but then the game-play lacked several critical comfort standards that people had become used to thru BF:BC 1. Me? I’m a knifer. The method in which this is performed in BC 2 is ridiculous to the point that it isn’t even fun to do in BC 2.
Releasing Vietnam for BF:BC 2 is like releasing Ms. Pac Man extended for the WoW platform: completely worthless.
Sorry, but I’ll be staying with BC 1 and pray to God that they release some additional maps for us.

    Medal of Honor Gameplay Video

Cardsnumber7 is the first person on my subscriber list to post a Medal of Honor gameplay video to Youtube. He says himself that he’s figuring out how to play the game and the commentary isn’t very good but it gives a good idea of how the game looks and plays.

Geoff held a streaming session on justin.tv playing MOH but when I hopped onto his channel he was playing Arica Harbour in BfBC2! I guess MOH came later.

Now I’m wondering how many of my online friends are taking part in the MOH beta. Field Operative is, though he’s on Xbox and the beta is delayed a week on that platform. Geoff is, on PS3, Mike too?

Field Operative linked to more videos, I hope he doesn’t mind if I post them too. They’re tiny on his blog!

Ah feck, tempted now to pre-order it to get in the beta!

    • David Nicol 8:52 am on June 18, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Geoff had technical issues with the beta, I don’t know if it was the code, but he couldn’t get in. I was in the live stream for a while to watch. The chat was pretty annoying to watch though (the viewers, not Geoff et al).

      • Donncha 9:03 am on June 18, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Ah ha. On some of the videos above they mention that the beta freezes the PS3. Cards took 3 or 4 tries to get a video of one round without crashing.

BfBC2 isn’t quite that bad for me, but every 2nd or 3rd night the PS3 will freeze and require a reboot when I play that game.

Have you pre-ordered the game to get in the beta?

    • Donncha 11:37 am on June 18, 2010 Permalink | Reply

This amazon.co.uk thread on the beta is discouraging. Seems that European users won’t get into the beta until July 5th, and the last comment currently is less than encouraging:

Dont worry guys your not missing anything. imagine the worst parts of modern warfare combined with the wost parts of battlefield with out any of the bits that made that game great. poor graphics, no destructible enviroments, weak guns, poor sound, no teams or squads, only three classes with an option of two guns per class, no awsum battlefield bullet physics, poor hit dection, insurgents use a gay little axe intead of a knife (it looks soo gay), the game freezes for about a second everytime you die, which really pulls you out of the game, art design is completely uninspired and bland. for all the snipers out there none of the sniper rifles ae one shot one kill which makes sniping a chore when you can be murdered with three rounds fo an assult rifle of sub machine gun from across the map. when i started playing last night thee where around 400-500 people online playing it, now there are only 100. play battlefield or modern warfare or even better go outside and do something productive, this game sucks.

After watching this video by bigMooney06 I decided to pre-order the game. I didn’t know you didn’t have to pay for it until the game ships so if I don’t like it there’s plenty of time to cancel the order.

Won’t get the beta code until July 5th though. Grrr.

    Bad Company 2 Onslaught

Onslaught has just been announced. It’s a coop game for Battlefield Bad Company which sounds really interesting.

Onslaught is bringing co-op gameplay to Battlefield for the first time on console. The new game mode puts you and up to three friends against the enemy on Valparaiso, Atacama Desert, Isla Inocentes and Nelson Bay – redesigned with new lighting, time of day, added vehicles and other effects. Each map has a dedicated gameplay focus, requiring different levels of teamwork in order to complete the objectives against an onslaught of enemy AI. Vehicle warfare comes to the forefront in Atacama Desert while Nelson Bay focuses squarely on infantry assault. Players can compete in squads and check individual progress via the dedicated Onslaught leaderboards.

(The video is nothing special, 1/3 of it is company logos!)

The one fly in the ointment is that it won’t be free. If it gets good reviews and if my friends on PSN and Xbox Live want to buy it I’ll probably pick it up.

Unfortunately if you’re on PC, you’re out of luck due to the way they’ve deployed/designed their servers.

Bad Company 2 gets auto balanced some more

It’s like walking a tightrope. Lean one way or another and you’ll get hammered when you fall.

EA are deploying their R9 servers and among the fixes is the following:

Autobalance improved, it shuffles people both during and between rounds now, and does a better job.

I hope so. Some of the games last night were so lopsided that rounds were over in minutes. I suspect there might have been one other squad working together, and David and myself in our small mini squad may have been bumped to the other side to shore up a losing team. Unfortunately we were overrun a in our last game I think and we noticed our team was 2 men down.

The best games are those that go on and on, and you have to fight and hold your positions with a team that’s doing it’s job. Again and again I saw team mates run past a detonating bomb without a care for disarming it. So frustrating.

    • David Nicol 8:39 am on April 9, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Yup, that last game the attackers still had about 50 tickets left! There’s something really wrong when that happens. However, I’d rather not chop and change sides during a game. I like to be on one team and work for that team, not suddenly find myself on the other side. If you know you’re likely to swap sides then what is the point of trying to do well for your team……you may as well just kill whore 0_o

I hope EA don’t screw it up.

      • Donncha 9:08 am on April 9, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I wasn’t paying attention to who was on my team but it was very odd. Both teams seemed to be really good at attacking but sucked at defending.

Then again, I just remembered you noticed the other team were 2 down when they were defending so many there just wasn’t enough people online at the time. Perhaps the game engine tries to give the attackers the edge in numbers because in theory they have the more difficult job?
