    BF3 Multiplayer Trailer

Yes, yes, yes. Footage of the alpha test of the game is making it’s way around the net but you won’t find it here. The game is far from complete but shows lots of promise.

Oh yes, check out the battlelog too. That would be the social interface to the game DICE are working on. (Thanks xRegardsx for reminding me ’bout that post)

Great Pixelenemy interview with Kevin O’Leary about Battlelog and the BattleRecorder.

Now, why is it that the gaming PC I want to get always costs over 1,000 Euro? PS3/Xbox versions for me!

    The Gamer’s Craic #3

Episode 3 of The Gamer’s Craic podcast is now live, with the “guest this time is NGT director and Hupit bod Gary, AKA Hypermole and also mole237 on YouTube.” David did a great job of editing it as always. Thanks Gary for coming on the show!

It was a laugh doing it, but DO NOT listen past the end. No good will come of listening past the end jingle. No, do not do it. Really!

Also this morning episode 14 of the Don’t Revive Me Bro podcast was released with Daniel Matros, aka zh1nt0 who talked at length about Battlefield and other things.

What does Battlefield 3 look like?

You’ve already seen this video but I had to blog it just because I posted videos of BF2 the other day. It looks amazing doesn’t it? Can’t wait!

Check out this article too which covers the demo shown to people last night at GDC. (Thanks Swordsman75 for tweeting that article!)

PS. don’t forget to read Chris’ comment on Woody’s BF3 video. Classic YT rant on a misinformed video. Click on here and look for ReddDragons for all the hilarious replies!

There’s also a Battlefield 3 subreddit to subscribe to too!

lol that was a solid rant on my part, I got a little defensive. Too bad they removed it from top comments even though it still has over 75 likes.

Battlefield 3 has extra pre-order content

As seen here, in the Community Press Room, here in various other places this morning.

This was one of the Battlefield 3 images released yesterday but someone modified the filename slightly and got this image which includes the following information:

The Battlefield 3 Limited Edition includes pack Battlefield 3: Back To Karkand at no extra charge*.

This themed expansion pack features four legendary maps from Battlefield 2 boldly reimagined with Frostbite 2 physics, destruction and visuals.
Completing the package are classic Battlefield 2 weapons and vehicles, unique rewards, new achievements/trophies and more.
For those who don’t pre-order to secure the limited edition, Battlefield 3: Back To Karkand will be available for purchase approximately one month after the game’s release

So, either that was a smart marketing ploy by EA and the modified filename was leaked by someone there or this was a lucky guess. It’s not confirmed yet and there’s plenty of time to pre-order your copy. I should probably ask, “Who isn’t pre-ordering Battlefield 3?” rather than the opposite!

Every report of this “find” says “someone” found it, not naming who so I presume it was an EA leak.

    • Alex M. 10:28 am on February 5, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Likely they just put the media/copy in place in preparation for revealing the info.

    • getcrackin 5:14 am on February 6, 2011 Permalink | Reply

It’ll depend on how much the “limited edition” costs.

I won the Bad Company 2 Vietnam Pack

Such a nice way to start a Monday morning, especially as I’m going to a funeral shortly I needed something to brighten the day.

I received a DM on Twitter from zh1nt0 this morning with the good news that I had won this little box of goodies! I hardly ever enter those “RT and win” competitions but it’s Battlefield so I had to, and glad I did now. Thanks DICE!

It’ll arrive later this week, and I’ll have an unboxing up here when I get my hands on it!

Bad Company 2 VIP Map Pack 7

Oh DICE! How you pull at our heart strings! For months you released map packs that were little more than gameplay mode packs, enabling new modes on existing maps. Now, when Bad Company 2 is facing stiff competition from the upcoming Black Ops you release a map pack with actual new maps!

Details are on the official blog post, but here’s a snippet from it:

VIP Map Pack 7 is on its way to Battlefield: Bad Company 2. This pack will include four maps never before available in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 multiplayer, two of them being fan favorites Oasis and Harvest Day. As always, this content is free for PC and console VIP players. Read on for the full story.

    Map 1: Oasis
    Origin: Battlefield: Bad Company multiplayer
Game modes: Rush, Conquest, Squad Rush, Squad Deathmatch

    Map 2: Harvest Day
    Origin: Battlefield: Bad Company multiplayer
Game modes: Rush, Conquest, Squad Rush, Squad Deathmatch

    Map 3: Cold War
Origin: Battlefield: Bad Company 2 singleplayer
Game modes: Rush, Squad Rush, Squad Deathmatch

    Map 4: Heavy Metal

Can’t wait to get my hands on those!

I’m thankful to finally be getting some new maps but what is with DICE and never releasing any dates for all their updates. I was figuring I was going to be pretty much retiring BFBC2 till Vietnam but if this comes out soon, Black Ops may not be getting the attention from me I thought it would.

      • Donncha 11:57 am on November 8, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Yeah, I haven’t checked the online store yet for a release date yet but it probably won’t be there as it wasn’t in that post.

It does say to check back Wednesday for a review of “Heavy Metal” so presumably it won’t be for another few days, and after Black Ops comes out.

        • Donncha 12:27 pm on November 8, 2010 Permalink

Just checked the store and there’s no mention of it so it’s anybody’s guess as to when this will be released. Probably be before the end of the month though.

A Bad Company 2 patch for PCs will hit servers tomorrow and among other bug fixes and tweaks this little change caught my eye. Hope it comes to consoles soon, but I haven’t seen many people C4ing crates recently so perhaps it’s a little late for this patch ..

Reduced all weapon damage to the MCOM by 50%

Lots of other changes, including an AN-94 change to reduce it’s short range damage.

So, is this patch too little, too late for Bad Company 2? Will we be still playing this game 2 years from now?

    • Alex M. 5:32 pm on October 28, 2010 Permalink | Reply

It’s less likely about C4 and more likely about rocket spam. C4 is a close range tool so no reason to block that. My friends and I commonly will trigger the timer on a MCOM and then spam it with C4 to get it down faster.

It’s the guys who rocket spam from afar to kill a MCOM is what’s annoying.

      • Donncha 5:34 pm on October 28, 2010 Permalink | Reply

That’s true. We were defending Alpha 2 on Nelson Bay the other night and a guy was RPGing the crate. I flanked him and got his dog tags. I think they ran out of tickets eventually… 🙂

Bad Company 2 Vietnam will cost $14.99

The new Bad Company 2 Vietnam expansion pack will cost $14.99 or 1200MS points, so says the new in-game trailer announced this morning by DICE.

The trailer looks good, but it’s not quite “in-game”. I’ve never seen a BfBC2 gameplay video shot from those angles!

    I’ll be buying.

      This looks epic. I’m in.

    • redd_dragons 1:18 pm on October 21, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I’m in too! $15 (or $18 here in Canada) is worth it. I was worried they would try to pull a $30 scam. Now if we only had a release date to look forward too as Winter is about 7 months long here haha

    • tyewebb 1:52 pm on October 21, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Wow I am pleasantly surprised by this price, I had convinced myself that they were going to try to screw us with a $30 price tag. At $14.99 this will be a sure buy.

    • getcrackin 5:39 pm on October 21, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I’ll TAKE IT! Now, can I have it gift-wrapped, please?

    • Conor 8:26 am on October 22, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Well I’m sold. Some nights after a few hours on BC2 I feel like I’ve gotten shellshock anyway. It’ll be great if this game could do the same. If my wife asks how my evening went I can just rock backward and forward, saying “You weren’t there man, you weren’t there”.

Mode Pack #6 is apparently coming to Bad Company 2 next week according to this post. No details, and I haven’t checked the BfBC2 store but it fits in with their monthly giveaway of new maps mode packs.

So, we’re not going to see new maps. That’s clear enough already. What would you like to see? If I was a betting man I’d say we’ll get rush on Laguna Alta which could be like rush on White Pass. Alpha will be so close to the attackers deployment battle will be joined as soon as anyone moves an inch.
Or they’ll make a mode pack for SDM or squad rush and everyone will go YAAAAWWWWWNNNNN!

I was just thinking the other day how the lack of a level editor is such a missed opportunity for players. The Doom and Quake series had level editors, other shooters from that era had them too. I remember downloading mods for Doom 2 and having a blast! Are games companies so scared we won’t buy their next big product just because there’s a level editor (and hopefully active community) in a game? Really?
Do they lack the imagination to make a better sequel and feel threatened by amateurs designing levels? Do they think we won’t splash the cash if we have new levels for their old game?

The average age of games players is now in the early thirties. That means they’re probably working, have a family and have (some) disposable income. Sure, getting maps for free is great, but what about a map store? The Apple app store proved that people will buy in their droves if the price is right. Apple make a fortune from it and there’s a huge community around it. People talk all the time about their favourite apps. Why the hell haven’t EA or Activision replicated this for their respective franchises? All we get is what the company blesses and produces itself.

Would you buy maps built by amateurs or even semi-pros who didn’t work for the game publisher? What if they were priced like app store products? US$0.99 for a map?

    Such a missed opportunity.

Edit: I forgot about Starcraft II. That has a level editor of some sort doesn’t it?

    • tyewebb 6:09 am on August 12, 2010 Permalink | Reply

The map store is a really cool idea. If maps were priced at 0.99 I could see myself buying quite a few maps. They would have to control things a bit, otherwise the game would become flooded with maps and matchmaking might get a bit hard to to do.

    • mjwhittle 7:52 am on August 12, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I don’t think it will ever happen though. The call of duty series has sold more then 20 million map packs to date. The lost revenue would be massive. They make to much money from DLC now and with the game industry slowing down it wouldn’t make good business. Me as a gamer would love it. New maps for a different day of the week .

    • TimoleagueDuck 10:14 am on August 12, 2010 Permalink | Reply

in my opinion i wouldnt as firstly it will be a trophy then people will put a level with a tree in it and bang 500,000 tree levels.
skate 3, far cry 2 had level editiors

    • David Nicol 5:59 pm on August 12, 2010 Permalink | Reply

All we seem to get most of the time a barely finished product and then squeezed as hard as possible in order for the publishers to extract as much profit from the consumers as possible. Instead of paying extra for added bits (or bits that should have been included *ahem* Onslaught), how about the developers pay us for every glitch that is found? That’d soon make them up their QA game!

But to the original question – no. I wouldn’t pay .99p for a community map. If I hadn’t come from PC gaming then maybe I’d think differently, but as it is commercialisation is destroying an sense of community. Can you imagine the amount of shitty maps that would be released? Just look at the app store now, how many of the gazillion apps in there would you actually pay for…. let alone use?

How about the developers allow us to use community generated maps in non-ranked games (so no boosting) for no monies? Create a community playlist using P2P to download the maps – et voila! Oh, but I’m missing something, and I can hear the publishers now…. “WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?”

      How about fan loyalty?

If you’ve ever wondered about the patching process that goes on to support a game, this post will make it clearer. I hope.

Having been involved with WordPress MU for many years (which involved merging code from WordPress core to MU after each new release) I can only dread the amount of effort required to figure out what changes in the cooked data files were benign or not. Merging PHP source code would have been a doddle compared to examining binary files.

The post ends on a somewhat positive note however. DICE will continue to support Bad Company 2:

We want to continue supporting the game, but if we want to change anything else than the game executable itself, we will need to spend time on figuring out how to do so with a less error-prone patch generation procedure … and preferably without generating as large patches.

There’s no point asking them to release smaller patches more often. When the data is “cooked” it doesn’t produce the exact same files each time. Even small changes will create cooked files that are vastly different to each other.
I presume this is similar to how lossy compression like Jpeg works. Save a file as a Jpeg twice and you’ll have two different files.
