It was for a few games of Call of Duty WAW and Bad Company 2 that I switched on my PS3 last night. Mike joined me in a few coop games of the WAW campaign. It was a blast to play on hardened difficulty and all new to Mike as he hadn’t played the single player game at all.

Next up we joined a few games of Bad Company 2. The BC2 community is definitely getting smaller. Most games were not filled. Games were tough, but we had fun despite the fact our team wasn’t the greatest in the world. Tye joined us shortly afterwards, and we were constantly awarded the best squad medal.

Mike left before or during my last game which was a last tough one. We were defending on Arica harbour. Attackers used every trick possible to destroy the crates. They basically steamrolled through us until the end where we holed up. I smoked the area, and knocked the attackers down to about 11 tickets before the destroyed our last crate. We did well even if they did use C4.

Since you’re playing the 360 so much I’m going to get the console this weekend, with halo reach. I’m sure once I explain it to sylvia (beg) that all the multiplayer action is happening now she’ll understand. Ah married life, you’ll kill us all.

    • Donncha 4:45 pm on October 8, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Haha, it’s only that Halo is a new game, but I will be playing that with Paul, Tye, DOD, and whoever else is around because I’m starting to enjoy it.

I’ll be buying Black Ops on PS3 though, and probably any other multi-format game will be on that console too. Keep that in mind before you say anything at home!

Oh, also remember that you’ll need a Gold Xbox Live account that you have to pay for.. Don’t buy it directly from MS, you can get it vastly reduced if you search around! I bought mine last year for 31 Pounds Sterling. Must renew that in the next month or so …

    • Donncha 5:05 pm on October 8, 2010 Permalink | Reply

And I renewed it through the link I mentioned above. 38 Euro for 13 months vs 59 Euro if bought through the Xbox from MS. Nice saving 🙂

That last game defending on Arica Harbor turned pretty epic at the last base, they were steamrolling our worthless team before that. I thought we were going to get them at the end there but the crate bashing got the best of us.

After using the theatre in Reach I wish every FPS had it. That would have been awesome to watch from both sides, attackers as well as us defenders.

Here’s hoping Black Ops Theatre will be good!

Over dinner before I could mention my purchase idea for the weekend Sylvia mentioned how she was looking forward to getting me that xbox for Xmas (or putting something towards it anyway), what the hell was I to say to that!!! I want it now, buy my socks or something! stupid holidays showing the true meaning of generously, which is patience!!
hopefully you’ll still be up for a game then. Looking forward to playing you on COD as Medal of honor seems a bit of a cod (boomboom).

LOL, when you do get it, make sure you order the Xbox Live Gold account before Christmas Day, just so you’ll be ready to frag all the noobs with their new toys! (and me coz I suck)

I’m going to archive my Battlefield Bad Company 2 stats. Over the last 2 weeks it’s obvious I’ve played the PS3 version a lot more but I want to get back to the Xbox too. I find it fascinating how my different stats go up and down.

‘Course it’s probably only fascinating to me! 🙂

Bad Company 2 with David, Mark and Conor tonight. I found it hard to get into my stride but we were playing on a great team and I think won every game. I did come out with a decent KDR in two rounds too!

Ok, ok, never mind that they were crap scores. I was laying down smoke and refilling ammo quite a bit too but whenever my KDR gets near 1 I celebrate!

Still waiting on my component switcher cable. Friday night’s game was in HD and it made a huge difference.

Edit – never mind the above, thinking back over the games I think I’m just peeved that we were playing with such a strong team who played for the objective. I did my share of setting and defending the bomb but this time our squad wasn’t the only one doing so. It was quite amazing how fast we overran the enemy base sometimes. I honestly prefer those games where we have to fight for every inch (but not have to fight too hard!)

Mustn’t of course forget when David and myself joined the first game, we immediately saw the “Your team has lost” page. We didn’t even spawn! Argh!

I didn’t even get to see that! They obviously based their game joining code on MW2.

    Bad Company 2 Helicopter Tutorial

Not another helicopter tutorial? Yes, yes, but this one is good and it’s short. Flying a helicopter in Bad Company 2 is damn hard and AdaptableFuton suggests changing the air controls to BC1 controls. Might make it easier but you probably lose manoeuvrability.

Also, and this is the important bit. Engineers can only repair the helicopter when it’s flying low. I didn’t know that. Must have been dumb luck when I was repairing that we were at the right altitude.

    • David Nicol 10:27 am on April 13, 2010 Permalink | Reply

You don’t have to be low to repair in flight – you just have to find the right bit to drill on. I like being in the passenger slot on the Blackhawk when engineer as not only do you get to do repairs but you can also fire rockets out the door.

That’s what I thought too, but it’s in a Youtube video and you can’t argue with that!

Next time we’re in a heli we’ll have to give it a go. I think you’re right actually. Last time I repaired a heli in flight I just pointed at the floor and the HP just zoomed up again.

Smoke grenades. They’re one of the main reasons I spent so much time leveling up the assault class yesterday. If the video in my previous post didn’t convince you they’re useful, check this one out. (via)

I knew there was a reason I avoided it all these years! I’ve got a good way to go before getting the smoke grenades though. Only 1849/5500 points so far.

OK, it’s after midnight, I’ll be up early, this is a quick post about the great couple of Bad Company 2 rounds I played with David tonight. Some of the rounds were evenly matched but others were totally lopsided. Both for us and against us. We both got lots of practice in various tanks and helicopters and played really well as a team.

I also played a few rounds with Dutch452 on Xbox earlier, and we did rather well. I leveled up to 10, and improved my win/loss ratio.

On the PS3 it was rough going for quite a while as I decided to level up the assault class. I eventually unlocked the ammo box, but I’m still stuck with the AEK-971. My KDR went up by 0.02. Woo.

More tomorrow (err, tonight) when I’ll hook the PS3 up to the TV and get HD again. Standard resolution is really doing my head in and no sign of the switcher cable from Devineo yet.

…..I just realised, I totally forgot my manners with the vehicles! If you want to fly/drive any time then tell me – I was so focused on unlocking the alt fire that I didn’t think to offer you the drivers seat.

But great games – my KDR went up by 0.01 so it’s all getting better.

And yes, I was going to bed two hours ago ZZZzzzzzzz

      • Donncha 5:58 am on April 9, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I got to drive the tank several times, and I didn’t think to say about flying the heli. Might look for some practice tonight then. A warning, I really suck at it!

        • David Nicol 8:35 am on April 9, 2010 Permalink

The only way to not suck is to do it, so let’s do it! Make sure you fly the Blackhawk to start as it’s the most forgiving of the helicopters, the Hind is a cruel cruel mistress. Or just hop on the UAV. One thing I learned while playing with Hypermole was the angle of pitch of the heicopter affects your ability to gain altitude – it’s fairly common sense, but when you’re in the pilot seat that all goes out the window. Not understanding that was the main reason for me crashing. So when you’re nose down and losing altitude you need to pull back on the right stick.

While rushing in Bad Company 2 hit the “activate M-COM button” (B on Xbox, O on PS3 isn’t it?) before you get to the bomb. As soon as you’re in range the bomb will start to arm!

You’ll also avoid picking up the kits of those killed next to the bomb, happened to me loads of times. (via)

    • David Nicol 11:13 pm on March 30, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Yes indeed. No, I don’t want the sniper kit, I want to arm the massive bomb……right there! No…arrgh…okay give me my old kit back now can we *thip* *thip* *thip* DEAD

Has anyone made a montage of Medic clips? I suppose they mightn’t be quite as exciting. 🙂

    Operation: Rescue Playstation 3.
Summary: Playstation 3 used as media player for children’s movies is sorely underused and must be rescued.

My Playstation 3 needs rescuing. It’s currently sitting under the television in the living room and acting as a media player. Playing 3 or 4 children’s movies are the main use for it, so it’s definitely not used to it’s full potential. It’s definitely a waste of electricity running the powerful Cell processor to do video decoding!

To that end a media player and flash memory are winging their way from Amazon and they’ll arrive next week! My PS3 will be rescued! I traded in a few games today and bought the Playstation 3 version of Battlefield Bad Company 2. Well, it was either that or Modern Warfare 2 and some friends on PSN have or are getting Bad Company 2!

I played the first few minutes of the single player game and the controller was fine, but I expect it’ll be an uphill battle. And it is. I played a few rounds of Rush on Isla. Once defending and then attacking. I didn’t do well at all but enjoyed myself despite:

    1. The PS3 networking is type 3, or “strict” in Xbox 360 parlance. I didn’t have a mic and I don’t think it would have worked anyway. Hopefully I can fix that once I get it wired to the network.
    2. They were my first games as a lowly rank 0 but I took down a helicopter as an engineer, defended and blew up bombs and helped my team as much as I could. Even if I didn’t yet have a health pack or defibrillator.
    3. I’m still getting used to the controller. I can’t get used to R1/R2 and L1/L2. Do you put your first finger in the R1/L1 buttons and second finger on R2/L2? My hands are two big to do that. Same with melee and grenades. Totally confused me.

I did verify that the following trick does work on the PS3. A quick easy way to destroy a bomb site on Isla!

If you’ve read this far, here’s my Bad Company 2 stats. Yes I suck, but I’ll suck less with time. 🙂

1 – if you have a bluetooth headset for a mobile phone, try that before you shell out on a mic for the PS3. The PS3 uses Bluetooth for both the controllers and headsets so check if your Bluetooth will work (saving you about thirty euro). In the event that I ever use ingame comms I have an old Motorola HS820 that does the job. And the best bit was that it cost…. No Monies (my favourite price 😀 ).

2 – controller and where to put your hands…..Some cool kids do what is called “the crab” when holding their controller – it’s not comfortable and takes practice. But being lazy I just use my index fingers for both the 1 and 2 triggers.

And probably a stupid question, but have you got UPnP enabled on your router?

      • fieldoperative 8:52 pm on March 27, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I play FPS on the PS3 wih a wired X360 controller via the XCM Cross Adapter. The X360 controller is better for shooters, the PS3 is better for almost anything else (fighting, racing, hack’n’slash, etc). I have written a review about it a few time ago: http://tigertelevision.blogspot.com/2010/02/xcm-cross-battle-adapter.html

        • Donncha 9:12 pm on March 27, 2010 Permalink

That’s an interesting gadget! I’ll persevere because I think I was slightly better at tracking enemy soldiers as they ran past than with the Xbox controller. It’s only been two rounds so early days yet.

      • Donncha 9:22 pm on March 27, 2010 Permalink | Reply

1 – I do have a USB headset for Skype and it’s a stereo one with a mic. Must give that a go. Last time I tried it was with a brief game of Socom but I forgot to activate it or something. I could also use the Sharkoon headset with the PS3’s optical out of course.

2 – I think I’ll do the same, index finger for both!

Yup, I had UPnP enabled on both routers but I think the Xbox 360 defined it’s rules before the PS3 did so all the traffic went to the wrong console.

I realised this evening I have to buy another component cable for the PS3, and I’ll have to swap cables in and out of my monitor. (No hdmi, and only one set of component connectors on it)

        • David Nicol 9:45 pm on March 27, 2010 Permalink

UPnP is supposed to automatically detect and allow whatever requests UPnP connection free passage so you may want to try resetting it and giving it another go. One thing that used to happen with my router before I changed the firmware was the UPnP list would get full and mess up all access unless I went in and deleted the entries.

Check out the XCMlive Multi console cable doo-dah – more money, but less wear and tear on the component connectors on your monitor.

I have to try the UPnP thing again, and thanks for the cable recommendation.

Found it here too. As I need to get a cable..

That’s a good price on Amazon, the only one on Ebay is up for £31!

Yikes. Couple of games there, no mic so I couldn’t talk to my squad (sorry Mark!) and the other team decimated us. Watching the kill cams I never noticed anyone less than level 10 or 15 and several players in the 30s so they’d have mad souped up weapons, armour and bullets. *sigh*

      • David Nicol 11:47 pm on March 27, 2010 Permalink | Reply

        ……maybe I won’t get it after all.

Just kidding. I actually just pulled the Ebay auctions so I’m going to trade them in tomorrow for it. Don’t know if I’ll get on on Sunday or not, but either way, I’m pretty much cannon fodder for the forseeable future 😀

        • Donncha 11:54 pm on March 27, 2010 Permalink

Yes, unfortunately so. You will be cannon fodder, but like MW2 it depends on the team that’s put against you. Hopefully you’ll be luckier than we were tonight!

Anyway, with any luck, I’ll be around so you won’t be the only cannon fodder. 😉

      • Donncha 10:34 am on March 28, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Had 2 good rounds there. “Good” as in we weren’t completely overrun, and even won two rounds on the desert level, but the defenders cut us down on the third.

Still, I took out 2 bombs, the second and fourth Alpha sites and helped my team with health packs. I certainly wasn’t the worst player on my team. Unlocked the second weapon in the medic class and I’m an almighty Rank 1 player now! KDR improved slightly from 0.40 to 0.44 too 🙂
